Voices are the new hurdles

Voices can definitely kill. Voices can turn someone’s life right upside down. It can truly be damaging. However, it can also be for the greater good!

There are simply two types of voices that we pay attention to. The Internal Voice and the External voice.

The Internal voice is borne from you. This is when you unseeingly ‘talk’ to yourself to decide or remember something. Your inner voice is so important because it can either lead you to nothingness or to awesomeness. Which do you want?! This posed question is easy to answer, of course we want to be awesome! But are you voicing AWESOME right now? If you are, then I have to send a high-five in the mail!

be wary of certain voices

The External voice is the people around you in your social circle that talk to you. Similarly to the internal voice, the external can lead you to nothingness or to awesomeness. Which do you want? Are you feeling awesome right now from the words spoken from those in your social circle? Yes? No?

I used to suffer from both types of Voices. It really impacted me cause I knew I could’ve striven for much more but I repeatedly said I was held back and affected by those words I received. I can continue to blame but as you know one of my principles is that IT IS ALWAYS MY FAULT. I now understand this. You see these voices can come from your family, friends and colleagues. It’s just all about what you take in or HOW much you’re willing to be influenced by the voices.

LET’S KEEP THIS SHORT AND SWEET:

Internal Voice

  • To lead to nothingness:   CONTINUE TALKING CRAP TO YOURSELF. It will get you nowhere
    • STRATEGY : continue shooting yourself down and living in fear.
  • To lead to awesomeness: Power yourself with daily rituals and affirmations
    • STRATEGY: through connecting with Facebook entrepreneurs, Podcasts, music, YouTube, articles from Success and Entrepreneur magazines. Always reinforce positive and inspiring words to yourself. Even when you’ve done a “boo-boo” or failed, reword your speech to yourself from one that would be verbal abuse to one that would be encouragement.

External Voice

  • To lead to nothingness:   CONTINUE TO BE IN THE PRESENCE OF NAYSAYERS & LIFE SUCKERS. They talk crap about you and attempt to bring you down to their level because they’ve NEVER achieved the level of success that you’re gonna get!
    • STRATEGY: GET RID OF THESE PEOPLE NOW.
    • STRATEGY: Ok, realistically you might be unable to avoid them so IGNORE THEM. Switch off your hearing or simply devote very little time to speaking to them. The more you spend time with them, the more they will add to your failure.
businesswoman-840618_1920
surround yourself with those who are on the same mission as you
  • To lead to awesomeness: Surround yourself with those who are on the same mission as you are.
    • STRATEGY: They can be easily found on social media and in person! You just need to make and find the right connections.
    • STRATEGY: Use Meetup app or Facebook or LinkedIn groups to find your herd. Follow your herd. You can join and journey together.

DOMINATE YOUR INNER AND THE OUTER VOICES. LEARN HOW TO REACT TO THEM.

The guy who earned $1300+/weekend selling water

I hope you’ve seen my watchGrant episode 13 – Side Hustle – Increase your cash flow video and I did promise that I would outlay the story behind the fella who was selling bottles of water and making a tidy $1500 per week as a side hustle.

THE SIDE HUSTLE STORY

During a walk in Sydney CBD on a warm March day this year, I saw a crowd of people huddling around this fella who was wearing one of those nifty umbrella hats (despite standing under shade) with two massive ice boxes (esky) and what looked like a small battery powered fan. He was selling bottles of water. Nope, not ordinary water but superchilled icy cold 600mL bottles of water which he was selling for $3.50. When you purchased a bottle, he would throw in “refresher sprays” which involved him spraying icy cold water (from his squirt bottle) to your face and neck (not sure how safe it was but i did feel good after the spray!).

To get his attention and to initiate a chat, I purchased 3 bottles of his super cold water and after the 6th refresher spray, I asked him a few friendly questions and we had a 10 minute discussion.

He did give me permission to write about him but only if I addressed him as Kevin (he didn’t want his identity revealed). Kevin only runs this cold water bottle business as a side hustle for the last three years. His primary 9-5 weekday job is in HR, although the job is stable, his income is not suffice for his living standards and hence he wanted to sell bottles of water which are super chilled for two days in his big camping eskys. His idea came from seeing another person selling water. Apparently its a big business! Kevin only operates this water business on the weekends and carefully picks his spots on warm and sunny days with high traffic of tourists or during festivals. Kevin’s wife helps transport at least three heavy ice boxes of 600mL water and ice to the chosen location. Kevin told me on average he would make up to $700-800 a day of the weekend which depends on the weather and the stock they prepare. That would mean Kevin would have to sell 200 bottles a day! Kevin says he can fit 200 bottles easily as he uses his special tetris skills and special ‘ice’. I’d assume that’s dry ice which can be made at home (this was based on my YouTube search). Funnily enough, Kevin said he wants to quickly sell all his bottles so he can get back to ‘chilling out’ on the weekend! Kevin proudly swears that he can sit at his spot for maximum of three hours to sell his stock with his fastest record at 35 minutes to make $750! When he first started, money was the objective but now working approximately 2-3 hours on the weekend his primary goal is to impress his wife with the speed in which he sells the bottles. Once they are all sold, Kevin loads up his gear and the eskys onto his trolley and just like that his gone as quick as he sold to avoid council rangers and to get back to his wife!

THE FORMULA

In my video, I discussed the importance of the side hustle and how to go about starting one. Let’s analyse Kevin’s bottled water side hustle business:

1. Plan your hustle

Kevin knew the why and how of his side hustle. He sat down with his wife knowing they needed to increase their income. They forecasted weather, costs of purchasing stock and high traffic areas. They set unofficial KPIs (key performance indicators) to measure their success!

2. Market the value

Kevin had setup many signs about ‘quenching your thirst’ and that absolutely worked! His small fan was a way to draw many potential hot and thirsty customers. Keep in mind, some refused his change and said thank you! I saw it first hand when I purchased myself!

3. Sell an experience

His happy nature and the use of ‘refresher sprays’ really made him stand out from any competition! People just huddled and lined up to buy and receive their sprays!!

WHY YOU NEED A SIDE HUSTLE

To satisfy my advice to BULLETPROOF your lifestyle, you MUST create more cash flow and income streams. If you can’t leave your primary income, that’s cool. Then create a side hustle. Where it may be teaching, designing or simply selling icy cold water.

My Hangover

Yep I’m recovering from a hangover. I’ve had way too much. I tried to control it, but I couldn’t. It’s my fault. I’ll admit it wasn’t forced on me but it was my choice to allow it to happen. Now I’m wasting time recovering from it.

MY WHINGE

No. Geez, its not alcohol if that’s what you’re thinking. I’m suffering from holiday hangover. You see, the weekend that had just past was Sydney’s long weekend, where we had Monday as a public holiday and my family decided to drive down to the South Coast for a short getaway from our ‘hectic’ lives. Oh boy.

The weather was fantastic, well a bit windy but our beach house was absolutely beautiful and well set up. The pool, balcony and views were spectacular. Of course, the company made it more awesome.

However, I took my foot off the pedal in my hustle and grind. Every day my time is calculated down to the minutes to make sure I maximise EVERYTHING. Time is so important to me. Some will say this getaway was to recharge but I’ll say they’re wrong. As much as it was a ‘break’ from reality, I actually love my reality! I love getting up early morning, smash out a short workout and then hit my goals as hard as I can.

I ended up getting out of bed later and was much more slower in my workload. Yes, call me crazy but I brought my solopreneur gear – ipad, keyboard, tripod, filming and recording equipment! Some of my mates thought I was crazy! But I love the work, I love the hustle and grind. I was effective but no way near as efficient than I usually am!

The worst part is I felt incredibly fatigued coming back home and I’ll be honest, I felt bewildered. All of my systems, responsibilities and energy were ‘out the window’. Time was needed to recapture my ‘fire’ cause I had lost it somewhere – maybe it was still at the South Coast!

WHAT I SHOULD DO

HARDEN THE HELL UP! As motivated and driven I am and am known to be, sometimes I need a kick up the arse to reignite my drive and fire. Here’s what I did,

1. I took a cold shower (NOT FOR THE FAINT-HEARTED or if you have a heart condition!)

Besides hygiene, this cold shower really kick started my drive. It shocked my system. I usually have a morning cold shower to psych myself up, I realised I hadn’t taken one since the start of the getaway!

cold shower anyone?

2. Re-establish my goals

I had to rewrite my mission statement, outline my goals and targets and review my strategy. It is so important to be constantly be reminded of my ambitions – cause that it what fuels me.

keep reminding yourself of your goals

3. Get out and win

I had to get out and win. First day back at my office, I had to make sure I had to win something. Surpass myself – break free of ‘holiday shackles’. So I did. I followed up on a potential referrer by visiting her business and I was able to secure a coffee meeting! I needed to surpass myself and it did. I could feel the fire burning bright.

children-593313_1280
winning is about surpassing yourself

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

If ever you suffer from feeling ‘flat’ or ‘bewildered’ then do what I did. If your body and health can take it then do the cold shower and POWER UP. So that you can wake up and destroy your goals and tasks of the day.

Maybe I should take less breaks and holidays OR maybe stop riding this road solo. We’ll see.

DOMINATE YOUR HOLIDAY HANGOVER.
